Appeals

The Public Service Commissioner is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals under the Public Service Act 1996. The appeal process provides an independent forum for employees to have decisions affecting them reviewed.

Public service employees can lodge three types of appeals with the Commissioner - promotion, discipline and fair treatment appeals.

It is important to remember that an appeal may not necessarily result in a change to, or a reversal of a decision or action. Even when an appeal is successful, it is not always possible to attain the outcomes desired. For example, a successful appeal may result in the agency changing a process in the future.

To learn from previous appeals decisions, a summary of cases are published in our Resources section.
